Protect yourself from hazards of summer construction

Summer brings unique hazards to those working in the heavy construction industry. Knowing how to work safely in hot weather can help prevent heat-stress illness and heat stroke. The combination of heat, humidity and physical labor can lead to heat stress, increased fatigue and even fatalities. It is important to educate your workers on control measures.

These measures include:

  • Staying hydrated
  • Taking frequent breaks
  • Frequently using sunscreen and bug spray
  • Wear light-weight, light-colored clothing
  • Rotate tasks or try to work in shade when possible
  • Avoid caffeine

Recognizing warning signs and taking quick action could make a difference in preventing heat-related illness. WORKSAFELY® has created safety talks and safe-work procedures for working in the heat, as well as on other seasonal hazards, such as Lyme disease and the West Nile virus.
